• Investigation and Analysis of Senior Consumer Health Information Service of Public Libraries in America

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The paper aims to investigate and analyze the status of senior health information service in American public libraries, and provide reference for the development of related service in Chinese public libraries. [Method/process] Using Internet survey, literature survey, interview and case analysis, fourteen libraries are selected from the top 25 public libraries based on the Population of the Legal Service Area and whether they are providing senior health information service. [Result/conclusion] Following the standard service procedure, some public libraries in America take consumers over the age of 50 as center based on the consumer segmentation, the subject of health information service is focused to meet the senior information needs, and the purpose of senior health information service is to improve the health literacy, especially e-health literacy. All of these are the main features of senior health information service of public libraries in America.

  • Analysis and Enlightenment of the Dana Library Public Relations Award by the American Library Association

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper introduces and analyzes the Dana Library Public Relations Award set up by American Library Association in order to provide reference for library marketing and public relations activities in China.[Method/process] Using the method of network investigation, literature analysis and mail survey, the award is introduced from the name of award, the application of award, the content of award, and the way of reward.[Result/conclusion] The evaluation criteria of the award are composed of needs assessment and planning, implementation and innovation, and evaluation. It is concluded that the evaluation criteria of the award are strategic planning, environmental analysis, target users, project budget, and brand building. The enlightenment to the public relations activities of libraries in China includes:making strategic planning, building specialized teams, subdividing target users, establishing brand consciousness, and paying attention to constructing social relations

  • Analysis of Service Characteristics of America Library Journal's “Library of the Year” Award-winners

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The evaluation criteria of "Library of the Year"award established by Library Journal of the United States since 1992 and the characteristic service items of the awarded libraries are studied in order to provide reference for our libraries to carry out special services. [Method/process] Through the method of network investigation and case analysis, this paper made a comparative analysis of the service characteristics of 19 libraries which won "Library of the Year"award from 2000 to 2018. [Result/conclusion] Summarizing the service characteristics of the awarded libraries: attaching importance to civic education, strengthening educational functions; emphasizing the concept of equal service, reflecting humanistic care; providing multi-community information services and participating in community construction establish development;establishing brand awareness and brand project. The enlightenment to library circles in China includes: scientific and rational role positioning; actively participating in community poverty plan; building characteristic service brand projects; and broadening partnership areas.

  • Research on England Public Library Services to Persons with Dementia

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper studies England public library services to persons with dementia in order to provide reference for development of related services in Chinese libraries.[Method/process] The paper analyzed social background where England public libraries develop services for persons with dementia, selected 17 administrative regional libraries as research objects, used website survey, email consultation and other methods to investigate information resources, information acquisition services, physical space and activities.[Result/conclusion] With service environment and facilities,information resources and service personnel, libraries provide loan services,reader activities and service promotion.Service features include embedding in a regional collaboration network and leverage libraries' strengths, formulating action plans and integrating health and well-being of persons with dementia intolibrary strategies, recruiting volunteers and providing professional training for most service personnel, and providing services to support dementia persons and their relatives as well as friends, use a variety of promotional tools and hold theme activities on special festivals.The paper also provides suggestions for China public libraries.

  • Research on the Differences of the Elders' Choice of Health Information Sources in Health Situations

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Research reveals that there are differences in the choice of health information sources for the elders due to different situations, which provides theoretical basis and countermeasures for the library and information agencies to better develop health information services for the elders. [Method/process] Research refers to the classification of information sources by information source horizon theory. Interview method was used to analyze the differences of choicing the health information sources in three situations, including dealing with the health-threatening situation, participation and involvement in medical decision making, changing or preventing the poor health behaviors, and the demographic characteristics were used to explore the group difference between the elders in the number of information sources. [Result/conclusion] Research results shows:firstly, in the three scenarios, organizational information sources and interpersonal information sources are the main information sources used by the elderly. Secondly, with the growth of age, the dependence of the elderly on interpersonal information sources gradually increases. Thirdly, under the three scenarios, the elderly are not high in the use of network information sources and printed information sources. Finally, there are obvious differences in the number of information source choices among the elders with different educational levels and self-assessment of economic status. Among them, the differences caused by educational levels are reflected in all three scenarios. The differences caused by self-assessment of economic status are reflected in situation of participation and involvement in medical decision making and health-threatening situation.

  • UK Public Library Health and Well-being Services for Vulnerable People

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper studies UK public library health and well-being services for vulnerable people in order to provide reference for Chinese libraries support vulnerable people's health and well-being.[Method/process] This article selected public libraries in 23 UK administrative regions as survey samples, used website survey, email survey, and literature research method to investigate their health and well-being services for vulnerable population, analyzed clients and service contents, and used case analyse method to study health and well-being services for main service clients.[Result/conclusion] The results show that vulnerable people whom UK public libraries provide health and well-being services to are those who are disadvantaged due to disease and age as well as their supporters. Especially libraries pay attention to people suffering from mental illness, dementia, cancer and children and young people. Service contents include information resources, activities and spaces that promote health and well-being and barrier-free reading services. It finds out that firstly UK public libraries set health promotion as strategy aims of national and regional public libraries. Secondly, UK libraries join the health service network. Thirdly, libraries provide services catering on vulnerable clients' health needs. Next, libraries subdivide service groups and develop services for supporters of vulnerable groups. Finally, the article puts forward suggestions for public libraries in our country.
