• Nanodiamonds based optical-fiber quantum probe for magnetic field and biological sensing

    摘要: Owing to the unique electronic spin properties, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers hosted in diamond have emerged as a powerful quantum sensor for various physical parameters and biological species. In this work, a miniature optical-fiber quantum probe, configured by chemically-modifying nanodiamonds NV centers on the surface of a cone fiber tip, is developed. Based on continue-wave optically detected magnetic resonance method and lock-in amplifying technique, it is found that the sensing performance of the probe can be engineered by varying the nanodiamonds dispersion concentration and modification duration in the chemical modification process. Combined with a pair of magnetic flux concentrators, the magnetic field detection sensitivity of the probe is significantly enhanced to 0.57 nT/Hz1/2 @ 1Hz, a new record among the fiber magnetometers based on nanodiamonds NV. Taking Gd3+ as the demo, the capability of the probe in paramagnetic species detection is also demonstrated experimentally. Our work provides a new approach to develop NV center as quantum probe featuring high integration, miniature size, multifunction, and high sensitivity, etc.

  • A nanodiamonds-engineered optical-fiber plasmonic interface for sensitivity-enhanced biosensing

    摘要: Benefitting from the excellent characteristics such as low cytotoxicity, functionalization versatility, and tunable fluorescence, nanodiamonds (NDs) have shown enormous application potentials in the biomedical field. Herein, we proposed, for the first time to our best knowledge, to integrate NDs on a plasmonic interface constructed on a side-polished fiber using drop-casting method. The added NDs engineers the plasmonic interface towards improving the sensing field, thus enhancing the sensitivity, which, moreover, is significantly dependent on the number of drop-casting cycles (DCs) and the used concentration of NDs dispersion solution. Experimental results suggest that properly increasing the NDs dispersion concentration is beneficial to obtain a higher sensitivity while using a fewer number of DCs, but the excessive concentration extremely deteriorates the resonance dip. Experimentally, using the optimal 0.2 mg/mL concentration and 3 DCs, we achieve the highest RI sensitivity of 3582 nm/RIU, which shows an enhancement of 73.8% compared to the case without NDs modification. The sensitivity enhancement in biosensing is also proved by employing bovine serum albumin as a demo. The behind mechanism is explored via characterizations and simulations. This work opens up a new application form for NDs, i.e. integrating NDs with a plasmonic interface towards high-performance biosensing.

  • S-type stars discovered in Medium-Resolution Spectra of LAMOST DR9

    摘要: In this paper, we report on 606 S-type stars identified from Data Release 9 of the LAMOST medium-resolution spectroscopic (MRS) survey, and 539 of them are reported for the first time. The discovery of these stars is a three-step process, i.e., selecting with the ZrO band indices greater than 0.25, excluding non-S-type stars with the iterative Support Vector Machine method, and finally retaining stars with absolute bolometric magnitude larger than -7.1. The 606 stars are consistent with the distribution of known S-type stars in the color-magnitude diagram. We estimated the C/Os using the [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] provided by APOGEE and the MARCS model for S-type stars, respectively, and the results of the two methods show that C/Os of all stars are larger than 0.5. Both the locations on the color-magnitude diagram and C/Os further verify the nature of our S-type sample. Investigating the effect of TiO and atmospheric parameters on ZrO with the sample, we found that log g has a more significant impact on ZrO than Teff and [Fe/H], and both TiO and log g may negatively correlate with ZrO. According to the criterion of Tian et al. (2020), a total of 238 binary candidates were found by the zero-point-calibrated radial velocities from the officially released catalog of LAMOST MRS and the catalog of Zhang et al. (2021). For multi-epoch double-lined spectra observed by the Large sky Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Medium Resolution Survey ($R \sim 7500$), our method gives robust results for detached eclipsing binary systems observed in different orbital phases. Furthermore, this method can also be applied to other spectroscopic data with different resolutions as long as the systems are detached eclipsing binaries with nearly spherical stars.

  • Study on Outliers in the Big Stellar Spectral Dataset of the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST)

    摘要: To study the quality of stellar spectra of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and the correctness of the corresponding stellar parameters derived by the LASP (LAMOST Stellar Parameter Pipeline), the outlier analysis method is applied to the archived AFGK stars in the fifth data release (DR5) of LAMOST. The outlier factor is defined in order to sort more than 3 million stellar spectra selected from the DR5 Stellar Parameter catalog. We propose an improved Local Outlier Factor (LOF) method based on Principal Component Analysis and Monte Carlo to enable the computation of the LOF rankings for randomly picked sub-samples that are computed in parallel by multiple computers, and finally to obtain the outlier ranking of each spectrum in the entire dataset. Totally 3,627 most outlier ranked spectra, around one-thousandth of all spectra, are selected and clustered into 10 groups, and the parameter density distribution of them conforms to the parameter distribution of LAMOST DR5, which suggests that in the whole parameter space the probability of bad spectra is uniformly distributed. By cross-matching the 3,627 spectra with APOGEE, we obtain 122 common ones. The published parameters calculated from LASP agree with APOGEE for the 122 spectra although there are bad pixels or bad flux calibrations in them. On the other hand, some outlier spectra show strong nebular contamination warning the corresponding parameters should be carefully used.   • Rotational Velocities of Am and Non-CP Stars based on Kepler and LAMOST DR5

    摘要: Rotation is a critical physical process operating in the formation of Am stars. There is a strong correlation between low-velocity rotation and chemical peculiarity. However, the existence of many non-CP slow rotators challenges the understanding of Am stars. The purpose of our work is to search for low-velocity rotating non-CP A-type stars and Am stars and to make a comparative analysis. In this paper, we pick out a sample from the LAMOST-Kepler project, including 21 Am stars, 125 non-CP slow rotators, and 53 non-CP fast rotators. We calculate the rotational frequencies through periodic change of light curves caused by inhomogeneous stellar surfaces and then obtain the rotational velocities. For slow rotators, the age of Am stars is statistically younger than that of non-CP stars in the same temperature bin. In the comparison of the period, the average amplitude, and stellar mass of Am and non-CP stars, we discover that there is no difference in the photometric variability between Am and non-CP stars, which implies similar inhomogeneities on the surfaces. The average amplitude of non-CP stars has a downward trend with the increase of effective temperature and stellar mass, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction caused by weak dynamo-generated magnetic fields in A-type stars. In addition, we confirm four non-non-CP stars which have flares by checking FOV images, 24 pixel images, and pixel-level light curves.

  • JWST/MIRI Spectroscopy of the Disk of the Young Eruptive Star EX Lup in Quiescence

    摘要: EX Lup is a low-mass pre-main sequence star that occasionally shows accretion-related outbursts. Here, we present JWST/MIRI medium resolution spectroscopy obtained for EX Lup fourteen years after its powerful outburst. EX Lup is now in quiescence and displays a Class II spectrum. We detect a forest of emission lines from molecules previously identified in infrared spectra of classical T Tauri disks: H2O, OH, H2, HCN, C2H2, and CO2. The detection of organic molecules demonstrates that they are back after disappearing during the large outburst. Spectral lines from water and OH are for the first time de-blended and will provide a much improved characterization of their distribution and density in the inner disk. The spectrum also shows broad emission bands from warm, sub-micron size amorphous silicate grains at 10 and 18 um. During the outburst, in 2008, crystalline forsterite grains were annealed in the inner disk within 1 au, but their spectral signatures in the 10 um silicate band later disappeared. With JWST we re-discovered these crystals via their 19.0, 20.0, and 23.5 um emission, whose strength implies that the particles are at ~3 au from the star. This suggests that crystalline grains formed in 2008 were transported outwards and now approach the water snowline, where they may be incorporated into planetesimals. Containing several key tracers of planetesimal and planet formation, EX Lup is an ideal laboratory to study the effects of variable luminosity on the planet-forming material and may provide explanation for the observed high crystalline fraction in solar system comets.

  • A likely flyby of binary protostar Z CMa caught in action

    摘要: Close encounters between young stellar objects in star forming clusters are expected to dramatically perturb circumstellar disks. Such events are witnessed in numerical simulations of star formation, but few direct observations of ongoing encounters have been made. Here we report sub-0".1 resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations towards the million year old binary protostar Z CMa in dust continuum and molecular line emission. A point source ~4700 au from the binary has been discovered at both millimeter and centimeter wavelengths. It is located along the extension of a ~2000 au streamer structure previously found in scattered light imaging, whose counterpart in dust and gas emission is also newly identified. Comparison with simulations shows signposts of a rare flyby event in action. Z CMa is a "double burster", as both binary components undergo accretion outbursts, which may be facilitated by perturbations to the host disk by flybys.
