Excellent tribological and anti-corrosion performance of polyurethane composite coatings reinforced with functionalized graphene and graphene oxide nanosheets

In order to improve the mechanical durability, polyurethane (PU) needs to be modified to enhance the tribological and anti-corrosion properties. In this work, we fabricated a series of PU composite coatings reinforced with functionalized graphene (FG) and functionalized graphene oxide (FGO). The structural and morphological features of the composite coatings were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the dispersion and compatibility of graphene and graphene oxide were improved via chemical modification. Moreover, they effectively enhanced the tribological and anti-corrosion properties of PU composite coatings, whose optimized additive range was between 0.25 wt% and 0.5 wt%. The effect depends on the balance of lubrication and barrier of fillers and cracks generated by them. Finally, in comparison with FG/PU coatings, the FGO/PU coatings exhibited a better tribological property but worse anti-corrosion property owing to the abundant oxygenated groups of GO. They led to stronger interfacial interactions between FGO and the PU matrix, but destroyed the graphene lattice structure to some extent.

A biobased monofunctional compatibilizer (called Epicard) is first synthesized by the reaction of cardanol with epichlorohydrin as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR. Subsequently, biosourced polymers, polylactide (PLA) and starch, are melt-blended by a twin-screw extruder with Epicard. Confirmed by the measurements of contact angle and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance of the extracted starches from PLA/starch/Epicard blends, the Epicard only possesses a monoepoxy group to mainly react with starch and then increased the hydrophobicity of the starches during the melt-blending process. As a result, an obvious improvement to the interfacial adhesion between starch and PLA is observed by the scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the tensile properties of PLA/starch blends are effectively improved with the addition of Epicard. This study suggests a simple but effective material technique by utilizing a novel plant oil modifier to increase interfacial adhesion in fabricating fully biobased PLA/starch blends with superior tensile properties.

Preparation and Characterization of Highly Cross-Linked Polyimide Aerogels Based on Polyimide Containing Trimethoxysilane Side Groups

In this study, highly cross-linked and completely imidized polyimide aerogels were prepared from polyimide containing trimethoxysilane side groups, which was obtained as the condensation product of polyimide containing acid chloride side groups and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. After adding water and acid catalyst, the trimethoxysilane side groups hydrolyzed and condensed one another, and a continuous increase in the complex viscosities of the polyimide solutions with time was observed. The formed polyimide gels were dried by freeze-drying from tert-butyl alcohol to obtain polyimide aerogels, which consisted of a three-dimensional network of polyimide fibers tangled together. By varying the solution concentration of the polyimide containing trimethoxysilane side groups, polyimide aerogels with different densities (ranging from 0.19 to 0.42 g/cm3) were obtained. The resulting polyimide aerogels had small pore diameter (ranging from 20.7 to 58.3 nm), high surface area (ranging from 310 to 344 m2/g), high 5% weight loss temperature in air (at about 440 °C), and an excellent mechanical property. In addition, the glass transition temperature (349 °C) of the polyimide aerogels was much higher than that (210 °C) of the corresponding linear polyimide. So, even after being heated at 300 °C for 30 min, the porous structure of the polyimide aerogels was not completely destroyed.

Two types of fibers were prepared by using bio- based materials: a mono-filament made from poly(3- hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) and a multi-filament made from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3- hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and polylactic acid (PLA) blend. The two fibers were evaluated for mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradability for the potential appli- cation as medical sutures. The PHBHHx fiber showed remarkable biocompatibility by H.E. Stainning, with very little impact to the surrounding tissues. The degradation of the fiber was observed by SEM after implantation for 36 weeks, and the major degradation product was detected after 96 weeks. Consistently, the PHBHHx fiber main- tained more than half of the mechanical properties after 96 weeks. The other fiber was prepared by twisting PHBV/PLA blend strands to a bunch, and showed high biocom- patibility and relatively high degradability. The bunched structure loosed after 36 weeks of implantation. These low- cost and easily prepared fibers have great potential in medical applications, since they could avoid the formation of fibrous capsule, reduce the size of scar, and degrade into non-toxic and even beneficial products.

Developing amorphous alloys with good corrosion resistance have attracted wide interests recently. In this work, a series of Fe71 ? xCrxMo3.5Ni5P10C4B4Si2.5 (x = 0, 4, 8, 10, 12, 14 at.%) amorphous alloys are fabricated. Thermal stability of this alloy system increases slightly with appropriate Cr content. The corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution is sensitive to the minor addition of Cr (≤4 at.%) whereas higher Cr does not significantly improve the corrosion resistance according to the results of electrochemical measurements, SEM and XPS. These Fe-based amorphous alloys show comparable corrosion resistance with the well-known amorphous steel (Fe48Mo14Cr15Y2C15B6) despite the low Cr and Mo content, making them good candidates as corrosion- resistant coating materials.
