  • An analytical model to kinematically identify thin discs in MaNGA galaxies

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: We present an analytical model to identify thin discs in galaxies, and apply this model to a sample of SDSS MaNGA galaxies. This model fits the velocity and velocity dispersion fields of galaxies with regular kinematics. By introducing two parameters $\zeta$ related to the comparison of the model's asymmetric drift correction to the observed gas kinematics and $\eta$ related to the dominant component of a galaxy, we classify the galaxies in the sample as "disc-dominated", "non-disc-dominated", or "disc-free" indicating galaxies with a dominating thin disc, a non-dominating thin disc, or no thin disc detection with our method, respectively. The dynamical mass resulting from our model correlates with stellar mass, and we investigate discrepancies by including gas mass and variation of the initial mass function. As expected, most spiral galaxies in the sample are disc-dominated, while ellipticals are predominantly disc-free. Lenticular galaxies show a dichotomy in their kinematic classification, which is related to their different star formation rates and gas fractions. We propose two possible scenarios to explain these results. In the first scenario, disc-free lenticulars formed in more violent processes than disc-dominated ones, while in the second scenario, the quenching processes in lenticulars lead to a change in their kinematic structures as disc-dominated lenticulars evolve to disc-free ones.

  • Revisiting Pulsar Velocities Using Gaia Data Release 2

摘要: Precise measurements of neutron star (NS) velocities provide critical clues to the supernova physics and evolution of binary systems. Based on Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), we selected a sample of 24 young (<3 Myr) pulsars with precise parallax measurements and measured the velocity of their local standard of rest (LSR) and the velocity dispersion among their respective local stellar groups. The median velocity difference between thus calculated LSRs and the Galactic rotation model is ~7.6km/s, small compared to the typical velocity dispersion of ~27.5km/s. For pulsars off the Galactic plane, such differences grow significantly to as large as ~40 km/s. More importantly, the velocity dispersion of stars in the local group of low-velocity pulsars can be comparable to their transverse velocities, suggesting that the intrinsic velocities of NS progenitors should be taken into account when we consider their natal kicks and binary evolution. We also examined the double NS systems J0737- 3039A/B, and measured its transverse velocity to be 26(+18, -13) km/s assuming nearby Gaia sources being representative of its birth environment. This work demonstrated the feasibility and importance of using Gaia data to study the velocity of individual systems and velocity distribution of NSs.

  • Different Formation Scenarios of Counter-rotating Stellar Disks in Nearby Galaxies

摘要: Using the integral field unit (IFU) data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we select a sample of 101 galaxies with counter-rotating stellar disks and regularly-rotating ionized gas disk. We classify the 101 galaxies into four types based on the features of their stellar velocity fields. The relative fractions and stellar population age radial gradients of the four types are different in blue cloud (BC), green valley (GV) and red sequence (RS) populations. We suggest different formation scenarios for the counter-rotating stellar disks, and the key factors in the formation of counter-rotating stellar disks include: (1) the abundance of pre-existing gas in progenitor, (2) the efficiency in angular momentum consumption.
