  • Investigations and Thoughts on Capacity Building of Scientific and Technical Journal Industry Services in China

    Abstract: Purposes Investigating the status and role of scientific and technical journals in innovation and development, demonstrate the value and role of journals in promoting industrial development and serving industrial progress. Methods Taking scientific and technical journals of different industries as research objects, through literature review, site visits and  interviews, case studies and other methods, excavate from examples the initiatives of industry journals in planning to focus on industrial development, gathering high-quality resources of the industry, creating special columns and special issues of special features, developing the function of think-tanks, promoting innovation cooperation, etc., and summarize the inspiration of scientific and technical journals in serving the high-quality development. Findings Scientific and technical journals are important part of China’s scientific and technological undertakings, have an important value in serving innovation, promoting industry, facilitating exchanges, and advancing the progress of the industry, and are an important carrier of scientific and technological achievements and an important channel of exchanges. Conclusions Define the positioning of scientific and technical journals in the industrial chain, serve the decision-making and transformation, realize the industrial value of journals, so as to enhance the competitiveness of China’s national science and technology and cultural soft power.

  • Research on the influencing factors of the time lag of revocation of papers by Chinese scholars: Based on the Retraction Watch Database

    Abstract:   Purposes The revocation time lag can reflect the purification time of the scientific community, analyze the influencing factors of the undo time lag, and provide a reference for reducing the undo time lag. Methods A total of 17,916 papers from 1970 to 2022 were collected from the Revocation Observation Database, and 33 variables were selected as independent variables from the dimensions of policy, paper and author as the dependent variable to construct a regression model, and the influence of different factors on the revocation time lag was analyzed. Findings Research papers, publication dates, image problems, paper factories and meta-analyses were the main factors influencing the revocation delay, and the research integrity policy had no effect on the revocation delay. Conclusions It is suggested to strengthen the awareness of integrity of image problems, optimize the paper reporting mechanism, pay attention to the problem of paper factories, and pay attention to the integrity of scientific research teams of different scales.

  • Research on Value Flow Mechanism and Optimisation Strategy of Science and Technology Journal Industry Chain

    Abstract:   Purposes To analyse the structure of scientific and technical journal industry chain and the law of value flow of the industry chain, and make suggestions for the optimization of the value of scientific and technical journal industry chain. Methods Using the basic theory of knowledge management to sort out the upstream, midstream and downstream of the knowledge chain of scientific and technical journal industry development. Based on the value chain theory, combined with the science and technology journal industry chain, the value activities of the sub-chains such as supply chain, value-added chain and output chain are clarified, and the value flow of each link of the science and technology journal industry is made clear. Findings The structure map of science and technology journal industry chain with upstream production and organisation, midstream distribution and dissemination and downstream service and application is constructed with the flow of knowledge as the core. The value flow between modules is analysed from the perspective of value appreciation, and the value flow model of scientific and technical journal industry chain is constructed. Conclusions There are problems of value flow blockage, insufficient depth expansion and imbalance of benefit distribution in the industry chain of science and technology journals. Science and technology journals should break through the resource barriers to achieve synergistic sharing; accelerate the attraction of capital injection and clarify the revenue mechanism; deeply explore the content resources and explore the cross-border value-added channels; and improve the technical means to innovate the industrial ecology.

  • Exploration of the characteristic strategie for thematic publications in medical journals:a case study of Chinese Journal of Practical Stomatology

    Abstract: Purposes This paper probes into the dilemma of thematic publishing in medical journals, in order to explore the characteristic strategie for thematic publications, which provides reference for similar journals. Methods This article takes the specific practice of the Chinese Journal of Practical Stomatology as an example to objectively analyze the problems in the publication of medical journal themes. Based on the characteristics of medical journals and through their own case studies and theoretical explanations, unique strategies have been proposed to enhance the effectiveness of thematic publishing in medical journals. Findings The Chinese Journal of Practical Stomatology, as a dental medical journal, has established a thematic publishing direction that focuses on solving oral health problems for the whole population and promoting the development of oral health through correct guidance. The strategy of “topic selection that highlights social responsibility, language that integrates humanistic sensibility, promotion to increase public participation” has increased the temperature of the thematic publications and enhanced the influence of journal. Conclusions The thematic publication of medical journals needs to increase its temperature while showcasing its unique academic professionalism and profound thinking. This would improve social benefits and better demonstrate the thematic publishing value of medical journals in the new era, thereby assisting in the construction of first-class journals.

  • Does editorial board effect exist in Chinese academic journals: An empirical study based on management journals

    Abstract: Purposes This paper aims to explore whether editorial board effect exists in academic journals by analyzing the quantity and quality of editorial board articles in Chinese management journals, and to provide reference for journal quality construction. Methods Taking CSSCI source journals of management as the research object, this paper used the regression analysis and causal inference methods to reveal the relationship between the publishing of papers with different identity of editorial board members and the influence of papers. Findings The editorial board members are less active, and most of them did not publish many papers in their journals. There is a significant relationship between the publication of different identities of editorial board members and the influence of papers, and the editorial board effect exists conditionally. Specifically, the influence of the editorial board as an important author is significantly higher than that of non-editorial board authors. The influence of editorial board members who are not important authors is significantly lower than that of non-editorial board members. Conclusions It is suggested that the editorial department should enhance the transparency of journal operation and formulate the editorial board submission policy to reduce the potential editorial board effect.

  • Academic Exchange Practice and Development Path of Preprints for the Metaverse Era

    Abstract: Purpose To clarify the practical foundation, realistic challenges, and future development path of preprint empowerment in the metaverse era, and explore the development and challenges of preprint itself as well as its transformation and innovation of traditional academic journals and academic publishing ecosystem in the context of the metaverse era. Method Using literature research, comparative analysis, and case analysis methods, this study combs the practical foundation of preprint empowerment in the metaverse era from four aspects: intelligent technology services for academic production, platform field aggregation for academic publishing, collaborative participation in academic evaluation, and multiple ways to facilitate academic diffusion. Result In the development towards the metaverse era, there are many practical challenges such as high digital technology threshold, virtual reality disconnection, weak peer review process, and limited cognition of relevant personnel in preprint. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on integrating industrial clusters, attracting academic synergy, leveraging intelligent tools, and strengthening immersive experience. Conclusion On the basis of fully understanding the practical challenges of preprint academic exchange in the metaverse era, we should fully stimulate technological vitality and academic vitality, promote the digitalization and integration development of academic publishing, and further promote the construction of a powerful country in publishing.

  • Topic analysis and optimization strategy of new media tweets in laboratory medical journals

    Abstract: Purposes : This paper analyzes the topic of highly read tweets in new media of laboratory medical journals, in order to reveal the hot spots and preferences of users, and guide the formulation of tweet topic optimization strategies, aiming at improving the communication power and influence of new media of laboratory medical journals. Methods : Taking the wechat public account of Laboratory Medicine (referred to as Laboratory Medicine ) as an example, Python programming was used to screen out the top 100 most-read tweets published on its platform from January 1, 2018 to May 31, 2023. Based on Latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) model, 100 tweets were identified and analyzed, and then the new media tweet topic optimization strategy was proposed. Findings : The topic of the highly read tweets of Laboratory Medicine are nucleic acid testing policy document for COVID-19 prevention and control , medical industry code of conduct , and vocational qualification examination and continuing education . Based on the topic identification and analysis, the topic optimization strategy of multi-voice polyphony (serial sub-topic development, new perspective topic deduction and case topic collection) is proposed. To stretch the narrative tension of the topic of tweets, from text to text, so as to enhance the depth and breadth of the topic of new media tweets in laboratory medical journals. Conclusions By identifying and analyzing the research topic of the highly read tweets of Laboratory medicine , it is helpful to formulate more accurate optimization strategies for the topic of tweets, and provides a basis for the research innovation and spatial expansion of the future topic of the highly read tweets of new media in laboratory medical journals.

  • Exploring the Technical Path of Knowledge Service in Chinese STM journals: a case study of Consensus.app

    Abstract: Purposes To explore new pathways and insights for knowledge services in Chinese STM journals in the era of large language model technology by analyzing the operational model and technical implementation of the novel knowledge service platform, Consensus.app. Methods By combining literature review and online empirical research, this study analyzed the functions, features, and manifestations of knowledge services provided by the Consensus.app platform. In this paper, the technical implementation methods employed by the platform and its role in promoting knowledge acquisition from scientific literature were investigated, while its potential advantages and disadvantages were summarized too. Results The corpus of the Consensus.app platform was built by collecting abstract information from the Semantic Scholar paper database, and it employs various artificial intelligence technologies, including natural language processing, machine learning, and information retrieval. By extracting key information from research papers and creating a vectorized knowledge database, Consensus.app utilizes OpenAI’s interface to retrieve relevant information from the knowledge base based on user queries and provides summarized conclusions as feedback to users. The platform offers highly personalized interactions, directly providing data-supported conclusions for different queries and enabling quick access to snapshot information of relevant literature, assisting users in making rapid decisions. Conclusions The emergence of Consensus.app partially addresses the issues of accuracy and evidence chain that are lacking in large-scale language model responses. It also provides more diverse scenarios for the widespread and efficient application of scientific journals in the era of large-scale language models. It demonstrates a new pathway for integrating large language models to construct knowledge repositories and provide knowledge services for STM journals. In the new era, the STM journal community needs to attach great importance to data quality construction, cross-disciplinary collaboration, copyright improvements, actively join large-scale databases, embrace the trend of the era of large models, and embrace the AI+ era of STM journals.

  • Research on Collaborative Development Path and Strategy of Scientific Journal and Preprint Platform

    Abstract: Purposes To explore the collaborative development path of scientific journal and preprint platform, and put forward the collaborative development strategy of scientific journal and preprint platform, so as to provide reference for building a new academic exchange model in the open science era. Methods International representative cases of cooperation between scientific journal and preprint platform were selected, and descriptive case study was used to summarize and sort out the characteristics of existing typical cooperation models, from which the collaborative development path of scientific journal and preprint platform was extracted. Findings The research found that there are three collaborative paths in the cooperation between scientific journal and preprint platform, which are resource collaboration driven by platform development, process collaboration driven by user demand, and goal collaboration driven by open science. Conclusions It is suggested that scientific journal and stakeholders of preprint should fully understand the benefits of collaborative development, continuously strengthen the awareness of collaborative development, formulate collaborative development policies as soon as possible, and jointly build a collaborative development ecology.

  • Research on the Development Status and Influence Enhancement Strategies of Academic Journal Publishing Think Tanks in China

    Abstract:   Purposes This article conducts a survey on the overall development level of research institutions engaged in the field of academic journal publishing in China, reflecting the industry’s practice and understanding of academic journal publishing think tanks, revealing the development trend of academic journal publishing think tanks in China, with the aim of promoting research on academic journal publishing think tanks and consulting services for academic journal publishing think tanks, and providing reference for relevant policy formulation in the field of academic journal publishing. Methods We conducted a survey on institutions conducting research in the field of journal publishing,including academic journal editorial departments, academic journal associations, relevant departments of universities, research institutes related to academic journals and enterprises related to academic journals.We used statistical analysis and case analysis methods to analyze and explore the current development status and existing problems of academic journal publishing think tanks, and put forward strategies to enhance the influence of academic journal publishing think tanks. Findings Overall, the output of think tank research results in the field of journal publishing is low, and they are rarely adopted by decision-makers. The scale and size of practitioners are small, and the funding source for think tank research is single. The function of journal publishing think tanks has not been effectively utilized. However, there is still significant room for development in the construction of academic journal publishing think tanks in China. Conclusions It is suggested that relevant management departments strengthen guidance on the development of the journal think tank industry. Research institutions in the field of journal publishing should strengthen the transformation of achievements and expand funding sources, clarify the strategic positioning of think tank research, establish benchmark institutions, strengthen the cultivation of think tank research literacy among journal practitioners, use intelligent journal data platform tools to carry out think tank research, and strengthen communication and cooperation between different publishing think tanks.
     

  • Goal, norm and spirit: The Connotation Construction and Inspiration of the Chinese Paradigm of Science Communication —— Center on the Chinese Association of Scientific Journals (1947-1950)

    Abstract: Purposes To study the early practice and exploration of Chinese modernization in the scientific communication community, and to trace the historical origin and spiritual characteristics of the construction of the Chinese paradigm of the scientific communication system,and to provide the historical mirror and inject the spiritual core for the innovation and development of the independent knowledge system of scientific communication on the cultural foundation with Chinese characteristics.
    Methods Based on the connotation construction of science communication community, study the practical activities and related exchanges of promoting the editing and distribution of scientific journals, and analyze and summarize the construction of the connotation of the scientific journals in China.
    Findings China Association of Scientific Journal explored the paradigm construction of scientific journals from three aspects of system goal, code of conduct and spiritual temperament: requiring scientific journals to survive together and play the mission, adhere to Chinese standard and classification construction, pay and sow beliefs.
    Conclusions The organizational exploration of China Association of Scientific Journals was the conscious practice of Chinese scientists to the social role of scientists, and initially constructed the paradigm connotation of Chinese scientific journals.。Under the guarantee of the Social conditions of scientific nationalization and people’s science in new China, the Chinese paradigm of the scientific communication system has been implemented.

  • Research on the Factors Affecting User Satisfaction of enhanced publications

    Abstract: Purposes By discussing the influencing factors of academic journals’ enhanced publishing user satisfaction, we will study how to improve users’ satisfaction with enhanced publishing, so as to improve the academic community’s recognition of enhanced publishing, and promote the further development of enhanced publishing in the direction of enrichment of content, rationalization of form, and higher practical value. 
    Methods Taking CNKI’s enhanced publishing as an example, the original data was collected through interviews, and grounded theory was used for coding to extract the influencing factors of academic journals’ enhanced publishing user satisfaction. On this basis, the DEMATEL model is used to construct the relationship matrix of the influencing factors of user satisfaction, and the key influencing factors are determined.
    Findings The factors that affect the user satisfaction of academic journals are concentrated on the content layer, functional layer and interactive application layer. The key factors include: enhancing the platform’s functional support of publishing services, enhancing the content of publications, and enhancing the presentation and use mechanism of publications, etc.
    Conclusions  Based on the knowledge application process of knowledge processing, knowledge acquisition and knowledge reproduction,enhanced publishing service can be optimized and improved through content media fusion, open search and association, and large language model empowerment.

  • A study on factors influencing dissemination effect of WeChat short videos in popular science journals

    Abstract: This paper aims to explore the factors influencing dissemination effect of WeChat short videos in popular science journals, so as to provide references for popular science journals to effectively spread science and enhance their influence with the help of wechat short video. Methods Elaboration Likelihood Model theory was employed as the theoretical framework, an empirical analysis was conducted on 762 WeChat short videos from 22 outstanding popular science journals in China . Findings Several factors significantly influence the dissemination effect of wechat short video in popular science journals.These factors include themes,title techniques, presentation form, background music, attraction of information source.However, short videos duration, professionalism and credibility of information source have no significant impact on the dissemination effect.In addition,the average number of videos published per month and the number of new media platforms rather than the location of popular science journals has a moderating effect. Conclusions WeChat short videos in popular science journals should select those content themes that relevant and resonate with audience’s daily lives to optimize dissemination effect.More enjoyable vedio-watching experience would be enhanced by making attractive title,employing multiple elements such as animation, images, commentary, and adding background music reasonably. Meanwhile, it’s essential for popular science journals to take on the responsibility of science popularization and recommend attractive disseminators.The strategic emphasis on diligence in the operations of short videos,as well as the development of multi platform dissemination style,is vital to enhance the dissemination effect.

  • Development status and analysis of English medical journals in China facing world first-class scientific and technological journals

    Abstract: [Purposes]This paper analyzes the overall situation and development path of English medical journals in China and attempts to propose development suggestions, so as to provide reference for the improvement of medical journals and the construction of a world first-class medical scientific and technological journal system. [Method] A total of 120 English medical journals, which had approved CN number, included in the "Annual Report on the Impact Factors of Chinese Academic Journals" (2022), and funded by the National Science and Technology Journal Program, were included in this study. The basic information of the journals, as well as data on funding by the National Science and Technology Journal Program, domestic and international publishing cooperation, and inclusion in important international databases, were collected. The characteristics of discipline distribution, operating form, academic influence, open access, and cluster development of journals were analyzed. [Findings] In recent years, the number of English medical journals has rapidly increased in China, and the proportion of funding by the National Science and Technology Journal Program was high. These journals were mainly published quarterly. Universities and societies/associations were the main independent sponsors of the journals, and the proportion of collaborating sponsors was also high. The digital publishing of journals mainly cooperated with foreign publishers. Forty-three journals were simultaneously launched on domestic clustered digital publishing platforms. SCIE/SSCI, ESCI, and Scopus database included 43 journals (35.8%), 17 journals (14.2%), and 97 journals (80.8%), respectively, with a wide coverage of disciplines. Literatures from 99 journals (82.5%) could be retrieved in PubMed. DOAJ database included 78 (65.0%) English medical journals in China, most of which used the Knowledge Sharing License Agreement (CC Agreement) CC BY. [Conclusions] The structure of English medical journals in China has been further optimized, with interdisciplinary layout. The journals have diverse publication forms, and focus on improving international influence and visibility by including in international databases. OA publishing has developed rapidly. Domestic publishing operations are trying to develop towards clustering.

  • Analysis of publication situation of rejected manuscript due to multiple submissions in medical manuscripts

    Abstract: [Purposes] To enhance the ability of medical journal editors to identify suspected academic misconduct in submitting multiple manuscripts, and to provide reference for improving the accuracy of initial review of manuscripts. [Methods] The research object is the multiple contributions and rejected manuscripts of Journal of Sun Yat-sen University (Medical Sciences) from January 2021 to December 2021. we track the publication status of manuscripts, analyze the behavior of submitting multiple manuscripts, republish journal issues and selected databases status, and construct a portrait of the first author group suspected of submitting multiple academic misconduct manuscripts. [Findings] In 2021, a total of 91 suspected academic misconduct manuscripts were published after rejected, of which 55 had changes in the authors’ name and affiliation at the time of publication. Out of 91 manuscript, 77 (84.6%) were published in various core journals: 27 (29.7%) were published in Peking University core journals, 17 (18.7%) were published in CSCD indexed journals, and 68 (74.7%) were published in CSTPCD indexed journals. The portrait of the first author group of 214 suspected academic misconduct manuscripts with multiple submissions has the following characteristics. 60% of this population is male and 40% is female; 54% hold intermediate titles and 34% hold deputy senior professional titles, but there are also some students on campus. The vast majority of educational qualifications are undergraduate and master's degrees. Most of them are concentrated in tertiary hospitals in non provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the central government. Most of them are clinical doctors, mainly distributed in internal medicine, surgery, and imaging departments. [Conclusions] It is recommended that medical journals strictly implement the three reviews and three schools, and prevent academic misconduct by establishing a technical process for detecting academic misconduct, strengthening academic integrity education for authors, and establishing an academic integrity alliance to share academic misconduct data.

  • The Internationalization Features of Research Topics in International Journal Articles: A Case Study in the Field of Education in China

    Abstract: [Purposes] This study aims to achieve a multidimensional measurement and diverse categorization of the internationalization features pertaining to the research topics of international journal articles.
    [Methods] Taking the field of education in China as an example, we compared the distribution of research topics in domestic and international journal articles to reveal the differences between them. Analyzing from four dimensions – research objects, leading countries, citation impact, and audience diversity – we dissected the internationalization features of research topics in international journal articles. We constructed the TPUR thematic classification framework to categorize research topics in international journal articles into different types to summarize relevant patterns.
    [Findings] The publication of international articles in the field of education in China presents a dual perspective of China focusing on international issues and the international community focusing on China. There are differences in the focal points and impact of articles led by China and other countries. In comparison, theoretical research topics dedicated to addressing international common issues and practical research topics focusing on China’s local issues exhibit more distinct internationalization features.
    [Conclusions] Researchers need to appropriately grasp topics of interest in international academia and choose suitable channels for publication. Research management departments should establish a rational evaluation framework to guide scholars in selecting appropriate publication channels.

  • Construction and application of evaluation indicators for hot keywords in journals based on term banks

    Abstract: [Purposes] To construct evaluation indicators for hot words in journals, and through the hot word ranking service, help users quickly and intuitively understand the cutting-edge fields and directions of journal research. [Methods] Using online literature research method to analyze the features of extracted entries in the current intelligent word segmentation lexicon; Using methods such as parameterization and standardized unique labeling to extract computational parameters associated with hot words, conducting statistical analysis, constructing mathematical models, and conducting multidimensional sorting. [Findings] A journal effective entry extraction model was constructed, and effective entries were screened and standardized. A mathematical model for hot word evaluation indicators was constructed through logical calculation for effective entries with parameter information. An application example of hot word indicator knowledge service was presented in the form of a ranking list. [Conclusions] The standardized unique labeling method can improve the entry recognition ability of the segmentation lexicon, making the segmentation results more professional and reliable; The journal hot word ranking service can help users quickly and intuitively understand the cutting-edge fields and directions of journal research.

  • A Peek into Cross-disciplinary Columns in Medical Journals of Comprehensive Universities in the Context of New Medical Education --Taking five medical journals of comprehensive universities in China for example

    Abstract: [Purposes]The concept of the new medical education put forward by The Ministry of Education  opens a new direction for the construction of cross-disciplinary columns in comprehensive medical journals, the study covers the condition of construction , analysis of its influences and causes, which is to provide references for the development of other comprehensive university medical journals. [Methods] Through the information search method, we investigated the situation of cross-disciplinary columns set up by medical journals of comprehensive universities, such as the direction and preference of column topics, the number of downloads and citation frequency of column papers, and their matching WeChat public platform strategies.[Findings] The column setting of comprehensive university medical journals focuses on the reporting of cross-disciplinary research results in the direction of new medical education, which has a good effect on the construction of new medical education, but the influence of the articles published in the cross-disciplinary columns is not absolutely dominant compared with other articles in the journals. New media communication is mainly one-way communication, and some journals have more novel operation strategies.[Conclusions] Factors such as the direction of topic planning of cross-disciplinary columns of comprehensive university medical journals, publication time, article selection, expert authorship, length of publication, and dissemination strategy are all important factors affecting the influence of articles. Comprehensive university medical journals should focus on the cutting edge in the column settings to achieve the differentiated development.   • Practice and development trend of realizing “dual carbon” goal served by scientific journals of coal sector:take Coal Conversion as an example

    Abstract: [Purposes] This paper explores the countermeasures for scientific journals of coal sector to serve the carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality goal (“dual carbon” goal), in order to assist in realizing national "double carbon" goal from the perspective of scientific journals. [Methods] This study employed the case analysis method, taken the core journal "Coal Conversion" as the research object, from two dimensions of practice path and development trend to elaborate the countermeasures for serving the “dual carbon” goal. [Findings] Coal Conversion closely follows the national "double-carbon" strategy, take steps of exploring the scope of topics, planning  hot special issues, focusing on achievements transformation, and improving WeChat promotion to serve the development of coal disciplines and the technological innovation of coal enterprises. [Conclusions] Coal Conversion also needs to expand the planning methods for special columns, special topics and special issue, improve the precision service level for users, and explore the operation of video accounts, in order to serve the "dual carbon" goals.
