Research progress of the new hypoglycemic drug tirzepatide postprint

Abstract: Despite the availability of various drugs for the treatment of diabetes worldwide, many patients still fail to achieve the recommended target blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is urgent to develop and apply new hypoglycemic drugs. In May 2022, FDA approved tirzepatide, a dual receptor agonist for GIP and GLP-1, administrated once a week to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes by assisting diet and exercise. A number of clinical studies have verified its effectiveness and safety in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, as well as its potential applications in obesity, cardiovascular risk-related diseases, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and so on. In this paper, the mechanism, efficacy and safety of tirzepatide were reviewed to provide reference for its clinical application after marketed in China.
