Preprints Academic Community Walk 2024 No.2 - Chongqing University Station

Preprints and preprint platforms are an indispensable part of open access and open science, and constitute the main body of the academic communication ecosystem together with journal publishing, academic conferences and new media. Preprints are becoming a new type of academic communication system, and international preprint platforms represented by arXiv are developing rapidly, and ChinaXiv (www.chinaxiv.org), a platform for the pre-publication of scientific and technical papers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has become a new type of high-end academic communication platform, scientific research infrastructure and an important part of academic public welfare undertakings of the country. In order to further enhance researchers' Cognitive of preprints, expand the academic influence of ChinaXiv, and promote the innovative development of academic communication, the preprint platform construction team of the Documentation and Intelligence Centre of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (DICCAS) has organised a series of activities to promote the preprint platform (ChinaXiv) into the academic community, and launched promotional activities for universities and research institutes across China. ChinaXiv is now being promoted to universities and research institutes nationwide.

On March 13, 2024, Chongqing University Library invited Professor Chou Jingli from the National Science Library,Chinese Academy of Sciences to give a lecture on "Preprints and New Scholarly Communication" at Chongqing University Library. More than 50 librarians on the spot participated in the study, exchange and discussion. In the lecture, Professor Chor Jingli analysed the basic connotation, positioning and development history of preprints and preprint platform, shared the latest construction progress of ChinaXiv, and focused on the unique role of preprint platform in academic communication. Professor Chor pointed out that as a new mode of academic communication, preprint platform provides authors with the fastest channel to publish research results and is also the first choice for authors to obtain the latest information. At present, database vendors have already included preprints in their resource system, and more and more libraries are incorporating preprints and preprint platforms into their collection resource system. Professor Chor also emphasised the importance of building a new ecosystem of scholarly communication, and that the academia and the industry need to look positively and objectively at the new type of scholarly communication of preprints, and will call for extensive participation and synergy of the national academic community, including authors, readers, journals, libraries and the academic community, in order to promote the development of the preprint platform. It is learnt that the library of Chongqing University has already incorporated the "Chinese Academy of Sciences Scientific and Technical Papers Pre-release Platform" into its collection resources system.

After the lecture, the participants exchanged views on the policy of journals on preprints, protection of intellectual property rights, preprints and library resources construction, and citation version of preprints. The "ChinaXiv Preprints in Academic Communities" event will continue to be held, and at the same time, more cooperation will be solicited and invited to promote the construction of preprints platform in the academic community and industry.
