Preprints Academic Community Tour 2024 - Wuhan University Stop

On 21 March 2024, Professor Chu Jingli of the National Science Library,Chinese Academy of Sciences gave an academic keynote speech on "Preprint and Knowledge Organization" at the 18th International Society for Knowledge Organization Conference hosted by the School of Information Management of Wuhan University and the Centre for Information Resources Research of Wuhan University. At the 18th International Society for Knowledge Organization Conference, organised by the School of Information Management of Wuhan University and the Information Resource Research Centre of Wuhan University, Professor Chou Jingli gave a keynote speech in English on Preprint and Knowledge Organization to the online and offline delegates from home and abroad. The report provides an in-depth analysis and discussion on the status and role of preprints and their platforms in the contemporary knowledge organisation system, and takes ChinaXiv platform as a case study to further discuss the value of preprint platforms in knowledge generation, accumulation, sharing and application, and the formation of a knowledge organisation system on preprint platforms.

In his report, Professor Chu explains the main features that preprint platforms have, such as open access, knowledge organisation, and scholarly communication, and shows the key role of preprint platforms in a new type of scholarly communication community through the mechanism of knowledge collection, storage, classification, sharing and utilisation. He believes that preprint platform is not only a storage and retrieval tool for research results, but also a comprehensive system of knowledge generation, accumulation, sharing and application. Through a series of processes such as technical review, results release, version update, etc., preprint platform effectively promotes the innovation of knowledge and the development of academic communication.

Professor Chu emphasised that for researchers, preprint platforms have become one of the main channels for paper submission, information acquisition and academic communication. The younger generation of researchers is increasingly relying on these platforms to access cutting-edge research information and publish their research results. If we ignore preprints, we will deviate from the mainstream of academic communication; if we treat preprints slowly, we will lose the main position of knowledge organisation. The preprint platform is a gold mine of great academic value, an incubator for major research results, a catalyst for promoting scientific and technological innovation, an important platform for nurturing new ideas, and an important high ground for academic discourse.
